Care Inspectorate Support for Care Services in Scotland
Scotland has its own regulator, its own standards and its own way of grading care. If you run a care service in Scotland, the support I offer is built around the Care Inspectorate's approach, not borrowed from elsewhere.
How care is inspected in Scotland
The Care Inspectorate registers and inspects care services in Scotland. When it inspects, it uses quality frameworks built around key questions and quality indicators, and it evaluates what it finds on a six point scale: 6 Excellent, 5 Very good, 4 Good, 3 Adequate, 2 Weak and 1 Unsatisfactory.
The same quality frameworks are designed for self evaluation. That makes them a practical tool for your own improvement work, rather than something that only matters on inspection day.
Care is measured against the Health and Social Care Standards, which describe what people should experience from their care and support. They are written from the point of view of the person receiving care, so the question is always what this feels like for them.
The legal requirements for care services sit in the Social Care and Social Work Improvement Scotland (Requirements for Care Services) Regulations 2011. Regulation 5, for example, deals with personal plans. Staff registration with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), and the qualifications that go with it, is part of the picture too.
What providers tell me
The worries I hear from Scottish services are familiar ones:
I am not confident our service would show well if the Care Inspectorate arrived unannounced.
We do not really understand how the key questions and quality indicators turn into our grades.
We received low grades and a list of requirements, and we need a credible improvement plan quickly.
Others are doing well and want to go further: "We are graded Good and want to reach Very Good or Excellent, but I cannot see what that looks like day to day." And some concerns are practical: personal plans that are not reviewed on time and do not read like the people they describe, or keeping track of staff SSSC registration, qualifications and deadlines.
How I can help
Inspection preparation
We work through the quality framework for your service type together, using it as a self evaluation tool. I run mock inspections, help you organise your evidence and give your team the confidence to talk about their work in their own words.
Quality assurance audits
An independent audit against the Health and Social Care Standards and the quality framework, covering personal plans, recruitment records, SSSC registration tracking, medicines, incidents and how learning is shared. You get a ranked list of improvements and help to act on them.
Training and development
Staff often know the Health and Social Care Standards exist but struggle to show them in daily practice. Training brings the standards to life through real situations, alongside sessions on personal plans, record keeping and what the key questions and quality indicators mean on a shift.
Policy and procedure development
Policies and procedures written for Scottish requirements and for how your service really works.
Support after low grades or requirements
When an inspection report brings low grades, requirements or areas for improvement, I help you turn them into a realistic plan with clear owners and dates, steady the team, and keep progress visible. As a former Regional Crisis Support Manager, I know how unsettling this time can feel.
Working towards Very good and Excellent
For services graded Good that want to reach grades 5 and 6, I help you find the excellent practice you already have, build on it, and show it clearly.
Personal mentorship
One to one support for managers and senior staff who want someone experienced to test their thinking with.
An honest word about grades
I cannot promise any grade, and nobody honestly can. Grades are the Care Inspectorate's evaluation. What I can offer is more than 20 years of experience in health and social care, an honest outside view of your service, and practical help to improve the experience of the people you support.
