Quality Assurance Audits for Care Services

An audit should change something. I carry out thorough, independent quality audits that tell you plainly what is working, what is not and what to do next, then help you turn the findings into lasting improvement.

Who this is for

"Our audits get done, but nothing changes as a result and governance feels like paperwork." I hear that often, and it is rarely anyone's fault. Internal audits are easy to complete on autopilot when the same person checks the same things every month. An outside view breaks that pattern.

Audits suit providers who want an honest baseline, services rated Requires Improvement who need to know where to start, and managers who feel confident in their care but want an independent check before an assessment.

What I look at

Every audit is shaped around your service, but most cover:

  • care quality across the five key questions: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led
  • compliance with the fundamental standards that CQC regulates against
  • risk management, including how risks are identified, recorded and reviewed
  • safeguarding procedures, and how well staff understand them
  • recruitment files, training records and supervision
  • medicines management, incidents, and how learning is shared with the team
  • care plans and daily records, and whether they tell the story of the person's day

Governance that actually does something

Regulation 17, good governance, expects providers to operate systems that assess, monitor and improve the quality and safety of their services. The word that matters there is operate. A completed audit tool is not the same as a governance system that spots a problem, acts on it, and checks that the action worked.

So part of my work is looking at your audit cycle itself: who audits what, how often, what happens to the findings, and whether actions are closed with evidence. Small changes here often make the biggest difference, because they keep working long after I have left.

How an audit runs

We agree the scope together first. I then spend time in the service reviewing records, observing practice and talking with staff and the people you support. Where it helps, I sample records across different shifts and teams so the picture is fair.

You receive a written report with detailed improvement recommendations, ranked so you know what to tackle first. I talk it through with you and your team, because findings land better in a conversation than in a document. If you would like, I can come back to check progress and audit again.

Why an independent view helps

After more than 20 years in health and social care, including time as a Registered Manager and as a Regional Crisis Support Manager, I know how easy it is to stop seeing what is in front of you. An independent auditor has no history with your rota, your building or your paperwork. That is exactly why the findings are useful.

What you have at the end

An honest, independent view of your service, findings you can act on straight away, and an audit and governance cycle that keeps improving things after the report is filed.
