CQC Inspection Preparation for Care Services
Being ready for an assessment should not mean a frantic fortnight of paperwork. I help you build a service that could show its best on any day, so when CQC gets in touch you are calm, organised and able to tell your own story.
Who this is for
Most managers I speak to say some version of the same thing: "We never know when CQC will assess us, and I am not sure our evidence would stand up if they came tomorrow." Others tell me the team does good work every day but struggles to show it against the quality statements. If either of those sounds familiar, this service is for you.
It suits registered managers, nominated individuals and owners of residential and domiciliary care services in England, whether you are preparing for your first assessment, your next one, or opening a new service.
How CQC looks at your service
CQC's assessment framework is built around five key questions: is the service safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led? Under each key question sits a set of quality statements, written as "we statements", that describe what good care looks like and link back to the regulations. CQC gathers evidence under six evidence categories, and people's experience of care sits at the centre of it. The ratings remain Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement and Inadequate.
The framework is not the hard part. The hard part is making sure the way you actually work is visible, current and easy to find.
How I work with you
An audit and gap analysis before anyone arrives
I start by spending time in your service. I look at care records, governance, staffing, medicines, safeguarding and the environment, and I talk with staff and, where they are happy to, the people you support. You get a written gap analysis against the five key questions, in plain English, with the most important gaps first.
Documentation review and organisation
Evidence that exists but cannot be found does not help you. I review your policies, audits, care plans and meeting records, then help you organise them so you and your team can put your hands on what you need quickly.
Mock inspection scenarios
I run mock inspections that feel close to the real thing: conversations with staff, observation of care, record sampling and a feedback session at the end. The point is never to catch anyone out. It is to give your team the experience of talking about their work with confidence, in their own words, without scripting them.
Staff training and preparation sessions
Your team are your best evidence. Short sessions help staff understand what an assessment involves, what they might be asked, and how to describe what they do every day.
Action plan development
Everything comes together in an action plan with clear owners and realistic dates. I stay alongside you while you work through it, so it becomes part of how the service runs rather than a document in a drawer.
What you have at the end
A clear picture of where you stand, an organised evidence base, a team that knows what to expect, and a plan you believe in. I will never promise you a rating, because nobody honestly can. What I can offer is more than 20 years of frontline experience pointed at your service, and the calm of having looked at yourself honestly before anyone else does.
Running a service in Scotland?
I support Scottish services too, working to the Scottish standards and quality framework rather than the English ones. Read how I work with services in Scotland.
Questions providers ask
Do you run mock inspections?
Yes. Mock inspection scenarios are part of this service: conversations with staff, observation of care, sampling of records and honest feedback at the end, followed by an action plan.
Can you guarantee a rating?
No. The rating is CQC's judgement and nobody can promise it. I help you see your service clearly, put right what needs putting right, and show the good work you already do.
